– a West Coast style IPA from Samuel Adams

Packaging
I am not a fan of IPA’s. Their hoppiness and bitterness hangs in aftertaste to the point of revulsion. Often, I find I’m dumping the rest of the bottle down the sink.
Rebel IPA is a true departure from the typical IPA form. My younger son texted me its praises, to which I was shocked. More often than not we share similar tastes in brews, so to hear there was an IPA he was thrilled about was something.
I was impressed by Samuel Adam’s packaging. Red, bold lettering, tall six-pack carton – it really stands out on the shelves. The lettering and labels are atypical of Sam Adams, with the exception of the “Samuel Adams” in small print in their typical font. The tall six-pack carton is form as well as function as the box protects the beer from light. But it really functions as a beacon so us beer drinkers can find it right away.
From the Brewer
Rebel IPA is a product of The Boston Beer Company which we all know better as Samuel Adams. They are not a part of a mega-brewer-corp, but they are hardly a
small craft brewer either. Since the mid-1980’s they have produced impressive beers and now they have over a dozen brews in their regular lineup.
Their website is spot on. Modern in feel. Plenty of social media. And tons of details and information about their beers, including Rebel IPA.
With 6.5% ABV, Rebel IPA is noted as a West Coast style IPA

Color
After comparing the two BeerColor.com scales to Rebel IPA, the color is a 6 and a half in Degrees Lovibond which makes it a Deep Gold beer.
Taste
Rebel IPA starts very smooth, with an ever so slight flowery aroma.
The middle hits hard with an effervescence that leads to a burst of bold, woody flavor like an aged scotch or very dry, oaky wine.
It ends hoppy, like an IPA should, but there are hints of pine mixed with a complex bitterness that is just astounding. It really is a brilliant brew.
I’d first try Rebel IPA all on its own. Experience the flavor without distraction. Then enjoy it with soft pretzels and mustard or maybe a plate of seasoned fries. This beer is bold and it needs a bold flavor to match with it.
